As the iPhone, and its competitors such as phones that use Google Android OS and the Blackberry, expanded the smartphone market, the number of apps also increased. How can companies make their apps stand out among their competitors to grab customers’ attention? We will explore the app deluge and provide a plan for standing out among the crowd now that simply having an app is no longer enough. The smart money is to create business apps providing a clearer path to standing out among other apps. It is not all about the business market though, because consumers demand certain apps as well and will pay... the market just isn’t as big. Reference and news apps abound when someone does a search in the store but this provides another clue to gaining share with consumers. More apps have “infotility”... create apps that utilize not only information but the ability to use that information to make tasks easier, organization better, or just make life easier. Users want apps that interact with their lives but it’s about interacting with data. They indicated it is all about offering customers more than a web browser, but an app that allows them to interact in a unique way with the company. Remember that if your customer is using the app, then it is more likely that they will sing your praises and get others to download it. This is a major issue and one that businesses need to focus on when they develop their apps... make it “sticky”. The apps of the future will look much like many apps available today, they will just utilize more personal data and preferences to attach more to the lives of the customer. Security concerns still exist, but as more users download and use apps, security fears will shrink away. To turn the app trend into an advantage for your business, consider the following. Just having an app is no longer enough. Business apps are a growing market. Make your app interactive to stand out. Apps that sync data with other apps are the future. Lastly, don’t forget to make your app useful.
